I make websites. Some in the past have made money, but most have failed. In fact, almost everything I have tried to do has failed. My goal now is to build things that get used in real time or fail gloriously. Take note of the amount of dumb ideas and how bad I am at interviewing. No matter how hard you try, you cannot fail 100% of the time. I am tracking all metrics live here and sharing my failings.

Marketing Lessons so far

Why obsess about views, engagement, and followers on social media? Like it or not marketing is a skill. Many people who have gotten good at this skill actively use their money and influence to make our world worse.

  1. To get intial people to your website, post and comment on subreddits and hackernews discussions when it is relevant. (Learned at 1 follower)
  2. Many mods will see your website link as spammy even if the users like it. External website links get downranked in any algorithm. Use Videos, Images, and Text instead.(Learned at 8 followers)
  3. Don’t waste time putting a payment link if nobody is even using the website. Even better, get a payment before making the site. This is less fun however. (Learned at 36 followers)
  4. Only the most interested fans will sign up for your email list. Social media gives people with slight interest a noncommittal way to follow you. Also social proof. (Learned at 91 followers)
  5. You can get large amounts of new people to see your website/Instagram/Tiktok/Linkedin one time, but they will repeatedly check out your work on Twitter/Youtube. Convert everyone to those. (Learned at 175 followers)
  6. A quick crutch is to build on top of the effort of others. Ideally something interesting/viral that doesn't have enough attention. Or something from 10+ years ago that everyone forgot. Many top creators played games, interviewed someone, or reacted to other content when they started. As a bonus, you learn what truly creative & good content looks like. Beware of doing this too much.   7. The Tiktok/Youtube/Instagram audience typically wants to be entertained. The Twitter/Linkedin audience typically wants to be part of a conversation. Carefully think when you link to either one. (Learned at 385 followers)
  8. Find people with the type of followers you want. The more followers these people have than you, the better. Be early to comment on their posts with something relevant and interesting. Their early followers will check out your profile. (Learned at 425 followers)
  9. If a post is getting a fair amount of likes and reposts, test out paying to promote it. It seems many followers you get from ads tend to unfollow after a few weeks...suspicious.(Learned at 489 followers)
  10. Summarize breaking news. Everyone is too lazy to read. The earlier you do it, the better. You can post your summary several different times with different angles (funny, informative, etc) to see what sticks. (Learned at 520 followers)
  11. Get bigger accounts to repost, like, and comment on your posts. The easy way is by positively talking about something they are working on (ideally in a unique way) or being on their side in some controversy. The better way is by writing things they find relevant and interesting. You can even link to it in their threads. (Learned at 520 followers)
  12. Post several times a day to social media to get into the algorthim that suggests your content to others without them directly following you. This may take up to 6 weeks. Post a lot in general if not low quality. On Twitter, most influential accounts average up to 2 followers per tweet over time. Also buy Twitter Blue and the Instagram Checkmark. The added benefits to this is you start to form friendships with the other people who post everyday and interact with them. You also start to get a feel for what types of content works with your audience. (Learned at 1,048 followers)
  13. Videos are better than pictures which are better than text. Most people scroll by without the sound on so have captions. Almost no one will watch more than the first few seconds of your videos. (Learned at 2,451 followers)
  14. Every now and then have a post that summarizes everything you have been doing up to now. An underdog story with all the effort, nitty gritty, and failure involved to get somewhere is far more interesting than just showing a result. People also like to hear actionble tips on how they can replicate your progress themselves. (Learned at 2,560 followers - Thanks Farza)

14. ZipX - SUCCESS

Import whatever you want into 18 different South East Asian countries. Once covid started, sold plane loads of masks and hand sanitizer to large customers like the French postal service, Hong Kong government, Hong Kong University, US Customs, and DHL. I was promoted to CEO of the company that acquired mine within a year.

13. Trusu - SUCCESS

Import whatever you want into Hong Kong. Due to major accounting mistakes and running the company on my personal credit cards (whoops!) I was 90k in credit card debt and planning on foreclosing the company and declaring personal bankruptcy the same month we got acquired. At one point I recall having a major fight with my roommate at the time over him rounding down 30 cents on a bill we split.

Run complicated statistical methods on data you have without knowing any statistics. I had to stop when my cofounder and roommate started to believe he was Jesus and I was Judas. He got committed to an insane asylum for a bit and is better now.

Walmart.com, Tuft & Needle, and Soylent expressed interest but profit would have been too low for any of them. We ended up charging 10 cents a shipment to a bunch of startups with a until my cofounder's personality and behavior became too erratic for me to stay.

3. Photon Duck - FAIL

A consulting business started with friends where we made websites for other people. Friend 1 was too busy with schoolwork (we were in college) and I fired them. Friend 2 lost interest until I told the customer we are shutting the company. I had lost interest as well. Friend 2 then finished the project and fought with me for more % of the money.

2. Complete your Goal - FAIL

People submitted a single goal they wanted completed and we would text and remind them to make progress on it. We forgot about it for about a year until we realized the hosting server company shut it down along with all the code and users. We didn't use git or backup the database or anything whoops. I will remake this again soon.

School Fails

  • The head of my University Computer Science Department, Professor Matthias Felleisen, said I am not in the top 10% of all students he has met when asked by my cofounder.
  • Rejected from my high school's Gifted Program. Although most of my friends got in.
  • My Speech Team coach Mr. Craddock, never let me represent the school for state 3 years in a row competing against 2 others.
  • Tied 6 times for 1st place on Speech Team, but never received one on my own.
  • Business Professional of America (BPA) never placed at State or went to nationals.
  • Most notably, I never even got 3rd place at BPA State even with only 3 people competing as I got disqualified for not handing in my code to place.
  • My Science teacher, Mr. Zimolzak told me I shouldn't take off a 3 days of school to go to State for BPA even though my friend was because I am not as smart and my grades were low.
  • Rejected from hosting my high school's Variety Show. 3 people applied in total and the other 2 were chosen to co-host it.
  • Rejected from my grade school Accelerated Program. Although most of my friends got in.
